  • Telepathy is the mythological term for someone who can read other people's minds through the use of their brain. It has been said to be looked down upon to be able to read a monkey's mind, but not a cow's.

While still in use, the general PSI rating is being phased out in favour of rating the specific psychic traits that a mutant manifests. Telepathy is the classic "mind reading" power, the ability to sense and adjust the thoughts of others. Telepathy generally breaks down into three basic modes: passive, active and coercive. Passive telepathy is rather akin to listening to "broadcast" thoughts and emotions, those which the thinker is "projecting" out from themselves. Passive telepathy is limited to those 'surface thoughts" and active emotional states of those around the telepath. Passive telepathy is in many ways the most problematic of the three modes, as it sometimes requires active effort to 'turn off". A passive telepath who can't 'turn it off" or at least learn to ignore the thoughts and passions of those around them, are in the position of someone with very sharp hearing trying to walk down a noisy city street. Or worse, trying to get to sleep next to a window onto a noisy city street. Active telepathy, on the other hand, is usually focused on a single target, and "enters" the mind of the subject. Depending on the power and skill of the projecting telepath, the subject may be aware that their mind is being entered. Indeed, the penetration may be anything from not noticeable to actively painful. Active telepathy isn't limited to surface thoughts or passions. Deep, well-hidden thoughts, memories and associations can be revealed this way. However, deep penetration telepathy is rarely that easy. The mind isn't logically organized like a library; rather thoughts, memories, emotion and such are a bizarre tangle of tangental associations, neurotic clusters, obsessions and furious denial. Going deep into another's mind is a risky proposition, and more than one telepath has gone insane by over-associating with the person that they"re trying to "read". Coercive telepathy deals with causing changes in the mind-state of another, causing them to think things that aren't their own ideas, feel emotions that they normally wouldn't, or perceive things that their senses don't detect. (TV: Image of the Fendahl) Telepathy could take varied forms: from an exchange of images, experiences (TV: The Three Doctors), to associated emotions and even mind-to-mind "conversation" between two or more individuals. (AUDIO: Worldwide Web) However, it was possible for a skilled telepath to monitor the minds of others without being detected. Some species and individuals could use their telepathy at a distance, but some needed to be in close proximity and others needed to touch the subject they wished to "read". Time Lords, for example, tended to be touch-telepaths, but weren't always limited in this fashion. (TV: The Girl in the Fireplace, The Lodger) TARDISes such as the Doctor's Type 40 had telepathic abilities through dedicated systems known as telepathic circuits. The circuits translated thoughts (TV: Boom Town) and any language for the passengers. (TV: The End of the World, The Fires of Pompeii) A rare mineral known as matricite could block telepathy. (PROSE: Synthespians™) On Yemaya 4 in 2257 several human colonists developed telepathic and telekinetic abilities. (PROSE: Sleepy) The Eleventh Doctor used a headbutt to telepathically transfer a large amount of information, including general background information, to Craig in order to explain why he was there. (TV: The Lodger)
  • Telepathy, or Mind Reading, as the name suggests, allows the Garde who possesses this legacy to initiate a telepathic connection with another being (it is unknown if this includes loric only or if it can be extended to humans). The telepathic pathway allows the user to read thoughts of others or open, two-way conversations to be made with the recipient.

Kylo Ren was also an experienced telepath, capable of extracting information from even unwilling targets. Telepathy was amongst the powers of Supreme Leader Snoke.

  • Telepathy, the ability to mentally communicate with other people or read their thoughts, was definitively proven not to exist hundreds of years before the events of Ethan of Athos. However, through a long-duration genetics experiment by Faz Jahar on Eta Ceta, the ability was created approximately at the time that Miles Vorkosigan was born. Terrence Cee was the first true telepath in the universe of the Vorkosigan Saga, and the only survivor of the escape attempt by himself and his wife Janine and the younger telepathic children. The work was based on some kind of natural variant found in an impoverished, mad, migrant witch-woman. The human pineal gland, located in the head, was modified extensively to create a sensory organ unlike any previous human one. The ability had to be turned on by ingesting large quantities of tyramine; once the body had processed the excess, the ability switched off. It also lay latent until puberty. The results of using the ability were not 100% reliable - some people's thoughts could not be read by Terrence; others could not be read by Janine.
  • Telepathy is the act of transmitting and receiving messages via mind. Telepathy is common in Near Death Experiences and in the higher planes of existence.
  • Telepathy is a way to communicate with others using one's mind. Goku is one of the Saiyans with this ability. Piccolo and some of the other Z-Fighters may also have this ability. Several other characters throughout the series can also use telepathy. King Kai is probably the most famous user of this technique and probably taught it to Goku when he was training in Other World with him.
  • Paula gets into a stance and closes her eyes to read an opponent's mind. If hit by an attack, Paula will read the opponent's mind, swiftly dodge the attack, and counter-attack with a powerful blast of PSI.
  • Over the years, Matt has gained great skill with the ability. At first, he could only hear thoughts and would do so accidentally, but he has learned to control this and to develop other aspects. He can by now also push thoughts, trap people in nightmares and manipulate perception by causing people to hallucinate. He can also block others from hearing his own thoughts, but only when he does so deliberately or when he's particularly defensive. In World 8, he has been shown to be capable of using his ability to reveal memories and histories which were hidden using history alteration, and creating telepathic shields around the minds of others to prevent other telepaths from learning their thoughts. By now, he tends to only read minds deliberately, unless certain thoughts leap out to him, or his control is weakened by doubt or anxiety. He has found that he can only understand and manipulate thoughts if they are in a language he has learned to speak. Also, the ability leaves his senses raw, and he can be incapacitated by bright lights and by loud noises like sirens or alarms.

The creature can be anywhere on the same plane of existence as you. The spell ends if you or the target are no longer on the same plane. Until the spell ends, you and the target can instantaneously share words, images, sounds, and other sensory messages with one another through the link, and the target recognizes you as the creature it is communicating with. The spell enables a creature with an Intelligence score of at least 1 to understand the meaning of your words and take in the scope of any sensory messages you send to it.
  • Telepathy (精神感応(テレパス) Seishin Kannō (Terepasu)?, lit. Mind Induction) is the transmission of information from one person to another without using any of our known sensory channels or physical interaction. Telepathy is one of the five great attributes of the Power Curriculum Program.

Some alien races, such as Martians, possess this ability as a natural extension of the powers common to all Martians. In some cases, certain restrictions may apply to an individual's ability to harness this power. Some telepaths may only be able to speak to specific lifeforms. In the case of Aquaman, his telepathy was once limited to marine-based lifeforms including fish and some mammals such as whales and dolphins. As he grew older, Aquaman was able to increase the range of his telepathy to include land-based mammals as well as human beings. Elementals may communicate telepathically with beings that correspond to their respective elements. Swamp Thing for example, can communicate with vegetative lifeforms, but cannot communicate telepathically with other lifeforms. In the 30th-31st century, humanoids from the moon of Titan possess telepathic capabilities. Some mystics may develop telepathic powers, but such gifts work under the rules of magic, and may function differently from that of standard telepathy. Those with enhanced levels of telepathy may also possess the ability exert their will over another person's mind. The Guardians of the Universe are capable of using telepathy, and often communicate with each other while in the presence of others in this way. They can also communicate with other beings, as Scar was shown able to communicate with Saarek and Ash while she was seemingly meditating while they were searching for the corpse of the Anti-Monitor.

The telepathic systems under different magic systems are similar, therefore communication between practitioners of different systems is possible. In StrikerS (ep.23), it is revealed that the Numbers are able to intercept the content of a telepathic conversation, but not to jam it. It is unclear whether this ability is unique to them or all Combat Cyborgs have it.

Cloaking via telepathy is not perfect and powerful Telepathic Mutants may notice and 'see' through this ability. * Telepathic Illusions: The ability to create realistic telepathic illusions and cause people to experience events which are not actually occurring. * Telepathic Camouflage: The ability to alter the apparent physical appearance of oneself and others by altering the perceptions of those around them. This can go so far as to make other people believe that the camouflaged people are not there (invisible). The only limit to this ability, if one exists, is only imposed by the number of people a telepath is trying to fool, not the number of people a Telepath is actually camouflaging. * Telepathic Manipulation: The ability to manipulate other people's minds easily, achieving a variety of effects. * Absorb Information: The ability to quickly process and store information, by mental transference. * Astral Projection: The ability to project one's astral form from their body onto astral planes or the physical planes. The user can perceive how people and objects relate to them, which manifests as either a colored glow, aura, or energy. The stolen psychic energy can be used to either boost one's own powers or channel the energy into someone else to temporarily increase their Psionic abilities. * Telepathic Tracking: Enhanced Psionic Senses enable a Telepath to detect and track other sentient beings by their unique Psionic Emanations (thought patterns contained in The Psionic Portion of the spectrum), especially if they pose a threat to one's well-being in their immediate vicinity.
  • Telepathy has been used the following times: * Kilgharrah used telepathy to contact Merlin after his arrival in Camelot to tell him of his destiny (The Dragon's Call). * Mordred used this power to call Merlin for help after his father was captured and later both he and Merlin telepathically talked to each other (The Beginning of the End). * Mordred used telepathy to talk to Morgana during her stay with the Druids (The Nightmare Begins). * Mordred used telepathy to direct Alvarr to Morgana's chambers (The Witch's Quickening). * Morgana presumably used telepathy when she was dying, as Morgause heard her cries (The Fires Of Idirsholas). * Mordred again used this power when telling Merlin that he would never forgive or forget his betrayal (The Witch's Quickening). * Kilgharrah telepathically shouted at Merlin when demanding to be released (The Witch's Quickening). * Despite dying, Balinor used telepathy to tell Merlin how to use the power of a Dragonlord (The Last Dragonlord). * Morgause used telepathy to contact Morgana when she had a vision of Gwen becoming Queen of Camelot (Queen of Hearts). * Iseldir used telepathy to tell Merlin that he was now the Cup's caretaker (The Coming of Arthur). * The Druids used telepathy to contact Merlin when they assisted him in finding the tomb of Ashkanar (Aithusa). * Merlin tried to warn Daegal with his mind to hide when he spotted a group of bandits in the Valley of the Fallen Kings. When his love interest was hanged by Arthur, Mordred emitted a scream that pierced Merlin's mind (The Drawing of the Dark). * Morgana, while taunting a powerless Emrys in the Crystal Cave, used a form of telepathy which made her voice sound as if it was coming from many different directions (The Diamond of the Day: Part One).

One form of telepathy reputed to exist is termed "mindscan" by abductees and is a process whereby a single alien or a group of such individuals not only mentally speak to an abductee but can also read the abductee's mind, with the option of whether or not to listen to the abductee. (TXF: "Duane Barry") In theory, ectoplasm (also known as psychic plasma) is a residual by-product of telepathic communication. (TXF: "Dæmonicus") Telepathy is often studied by FBI agents investigating the X-files. (TXF: "The End", et al.) While assigned to the X-files unit in 1991, Agents Fox Mulder and Diana Fowley spent some time in psychiatric hospitals, where Fowley witnessed telepathy being demonstrated by some patients. Years later, in 1998, Fowley remarked that, despite her experiences, she likely hadn't seen anything quite like the mind-reading capabilities of Gibson Praise. (TXF: "The End") In 1994, Agent Mulder found that killer Augustus Cole had developed the ability to kill his victims using, essentially, telepathic images. According to Mulder, Cole - having been subjected to long-term sleep deprivation - did this by remotely stimulating the cortex of each victim using electricity, causing his victims to experience mild visual and auditory hallucinations. (TXF: "Sleepless") In 1997, Peter Watts told Frank Black that, since he himself did not believe in telepathy, he had had to assume that two identical female clones who had each ultimately killed herself had earlier been in contact with one another, a theory that had subsequently been proven partly correct - the girls had been in indirect contact via a man who had created them. (MM: "Force Majeure") After Agent Mulder and a group of employees from VinylRight Corporation were taken hostage in May 1998, their captor, the crazed Mark Backus, claimed not only that Greg Pincus - a supervisor of a VinylRight telemarketing office, where Backus and the other employees worked - was a monster and that the other employees were zombies but also that Pincus could instruct the zombies by means of mental telepathy. (TXF: "Folie à Deux") In response to Agent Monica Reyes criticizing his techniques of searching for killer Jeb Larold Dukes in 2001, Agent John Doggett irritably pretended that Reyes, who preferred more intuitive methods, and himself were the only two agents at the J. Edgar Hoover FBI Building who could solve crimes with mental telepathy, which he rhetorically asked if they should simply use instead. (TXF: "Empedocles")
  • Telepathy is the ability to read the minds and thoughts of others. There are several characters throughout "The Southern Vampire Mysteries" that possess the ability of telepathy. A person who possesses the power of telepathy is referred to as a "telepath".
  • Telepathy is a passive ability that allows players and monsters to detect non-mindless creatures, regardless of whether or not they can be seen visually. Telepathy comes in two types: the less powerful intrinsic telepathy and the more powerful extrinsic telepathy. Intrinsic telepathy only works when you are blind, and detects all non-mindless creatures on the level. Extrinsic telepathy does the same thing as intrinsic telepathy, but in addition it also works while unblind, to a maximum range of 8 squares.

When laran is referred in the books without other qualification, it is taken to mean some greater or lesser form of telepathy. Telepathic contact between a telepath and a non-telepath is not really possible unless you have one of the Gifts that allows that kind of contact, Alton or Ridenow. The telepath will perceive only vague feelings or strong emotions of the non-telepath. A trained telepath can block his or her mind so that another telepath can not read their thoughts, among Darkovans it is considered a bad manners even a crime to read the thoughts of others especially without their consent. Keeping ones mental barriers properly raised to not inflict your private thoughts upon others is usually the norm and taught to those who have emerging laran. The onset of laran can often be painful and traumatic, threshold sickness, many times during this period a young telepath with read stray thoughts or unconsciously raise their own barriers. Once in place these unconscious barriers are difficult to lower and inhibit the development of an individual's gifts, sometimes when this happens kireseth can be used to lower them or someone possessing the Alton gift can smash through the barriers but this can be extremely dangerous. Once given and keyed into a matrix a telepath can communicate with another across vast distances, sending and receiving thoughts and messages.
