  • The magazine was born from a conversation between Marvel's Roy Thomas (who later assumed the rank of Editor-in-Chief of the magazine) and his friend Len Grow - who, at the time, worked in the Topps Chewing Gum Company. Grow believed that, beyond traditional super-hero comics, an editor would have to invest in a regular science fiction title and suggested this to Thomas and, researching the rights to Planet of the Apes, supplied him with the number of Selwyn Rausch, who managed the commercial aspects of 20th Century Fox. Intrigued with the idea, Thomas presented proposals to Marvel's Editor-in-Chief Stan Lee, who encouraged him to continue with the project.

Furman wrote the last 25 issues of the original series, then battled back to pen all 12 issues of Generation 2.

  • In 1979 , Marvel gained the license to create comics based on the new movie, Star Trek: The Motion Picture. They were the second publisher to make Trek comics (Gold Key Comics was the first). Marvel began by publishing an oversized adaptation of that movie in the Marvel Super-Size periodical (which was later reissued as the first three installments of a monthly Star Trek series). Their license was limited: the company was given permission only to use copyrighted material based on the movie, and was legally forbidden from reintroducing characters and concepts from The Original Series. This limit was felt by many to be the cause for the short-lived nature of the series. It was canceled after 18 issues, in 1981, and DC Comics picked up the license shortly thereafter.

In December 2009, The Walt Disney Company acquired Marvel Entertainment (the parent company of Marvel Comics), placing it under the same ownership as .
  • Most of these Marvel mags were penned by one of two brilliant Bullpenners: * "Blazing" Bob Budiansky, who ably edited the original 4-issue limited series before becoming the first permanent writer of the ongoing series, and is credited with creating most of the backstory to the Transformers mythos, as well as writing most of the terrific bios that came with the Hasbro toys. * "Senses-Shattering" Simon Furman, who had been the main writer for the Marvel UK series before being asked by Budiansky to write for the US comic, as well. Furman wrote the last 25 issues of the original series, then battled back to pen all 12 issues of Generation 2. • Marvel began its life as Timely Comics, founded in 1939 by Martin Goodman as the comic branch of his Pulp empire. It began by publishing scifi, horror, and Western anthologies, one of which happened to be named Marvel Mystery Comics. Timely's biggest sellers at this time were the superheroes Captain America, Sub-Mariner, and the Human Torch (nothing to do with the Fantastic Four character of the same name). After World War II ended, sales of superhero comics began to suffer. Timely's big three ceased printing, and the company changed its name to Atlas in 1950. Atlas published anthologies and single-story comics in a wide variety of genres, and made some sporadic efforts to revive its superheroes, but with little success. In 1956, Atlas switched from distributing comics itself to going via the American News Company, the biggest and most powerful magazine and comic distributor in the USA. Unfortunately, ANC was shortly thereafter was forced out of business due to unlawful business practises, and Atlas was forced to turn to National Comics, owned by their rival, DC, for distribution. This drastically reduced the number of comics Atlas was able to get onto shelves. This, plus a recession in 1957, forced Atlas to retrench, and for a time relied on art they had commissioned but not yet published. Atlas changed its name to Marvel Comics in 1961, and the first comic published under the new name was issue 3 of the scifi anthology Amazing Adventures. Following DC's successful revival of superheroes in 1958 - 1960, Goodman had one of his staff writers, Stan Lee, come up with their own superhero team, the Fantastic Four. This team Subverted many existing superhero tropes by eschewing secret identities (and, for some time, costumes), having a monster as a member of the team, and having the personalities of the members clash regularly. With the Comics Code in full force, Marvel began aggressively creating more and more superheroes, drawn from the considerable energy and talents of Stan Lee, Jack Kirby, and Steve Ditko. It was during this time that many of their most popular characters were introduced. Marvel's big innovation was introducing characterisation and personal problems to a greater extent than had ever been done with superheroes. Spider-Man in particular suffered from insecurity, teenage Angst, and trying to pay the bills in addition to fighting bank robbers. While this caused controversy at first, it ultimately proved popular with readers, with the result that Marvel ended up massively exceeding DC in popularity, as well as drawing in teenagers and, later, adults who would previously have been considered too old to read comics. DC would later experience similar success when Kirby and Ditko started contributing to it. From the start, Marvel's comics were tied to the real world to a much greater extent than those of DC or other companies. Characters lived in New York, not a fictional city like Metropolis or Gotham. Real-life events often impacted the plot; for example, Fantastic Four plots revolved around the space race and the 1962 stock market crash. Also, surprisingly for the modern reader, events proceeded in approximately real time for the first few years, with one year passing the comics for every year that passed in the real world - Spider-Man and the Human Torch both started off as teenagers in High School, but over a few years, graduated and went on to college. Also, when Namor was reintroduced, the writers actually came up with an explanation as to where he had been for 20 in-universe years. However, around 1968, things were stretched out by the introduction of 'Marvel time', in which a year in the comics corresponded to three years in the real world. This had morphed into full-blown Comic Book Time by about 1980. !Imprints * Marvel Adventures * Marvel Illustrated * Marvel Knights * MAX * Icon Comics * Marvel Noir * Cross Gen Universes * Amalgam Universe * Earth X * Marvel Adventures * Marvel Mangaverse * Marvel Universe * The New Universe * Ultimate Marvel * Marvel Comics 2 Due to Lee's busy schedule, he implemented a manner of writing comics known as the Marvel Method, in which the writer, rather than writing a full script, just gave the artist a story synopsis, and left details like pacing and panel layout to the penciller. Afterward, Lee would receive the finished pencils the artists and write (or rewrite if the artist added a preliminary draft) the dialogue and/or captions. This, coupled with Marvel's seeminglly more respectful treatment of artists, served to further bolster its popularity with fans. However, Ditko in 1966 and Kirby in 1970 eventually came to the end of their patience with being regulated to work for hire contracts while Lee got all the plaudits and jumped ship. In 1971, Marvel further innovated by violating the Comics Code. Lee, at the urging of the Department of Health, wrote a Spider-Man story with an anti-drug message. Since the Code forbade any mention of drugs, doing this story was a radical action in comic publishing. When the story proved a success despite opposition, it opened the door to comics unapproved by the Code, ushering in the so-called Bronze Age and bringing sex and violence to the medium. Despite early successes in the 70s and 80s, Marvel began losing sales to DC after 1986, both as a result of many of its writers and artists defecting to the latter, and DC's shocking deconstructions Watchmen and The Dark Knight Returns, as well as the epic Crisis on Infinite Earths. It suffered a further setback in 1992, when seven of its top writers and artists left to found Image Comics, and in late 1996, Marvel filed for bankruptcy protection. Following several reorganisations, buyouts, and layoffs, Marvel emerged from bankruptcy in 2000, and has been reasonably successful since then. In late 2009, it was bought out by Disney for $4 billion. The effect of this remains to be seen, but it will most likely be business as usual except that they don't have to directly concern themselves with pleasing stockholders anymore See Marvel Comics Characters for an index of the characters in the Universe, and check Marvel Comics Series for an index of all the series published by Marvel Comics, both inside and outside the larger continuity.

  • Marvel Comics introduced Conan in 1970 with Conan the Barbarian, written by Roy Thomas and illustrated by Barry Windsor-Smith. He was succeeded after several issues by penciller John Buscema, while Thomas continued to write for many years. Later writers included J.M. DeMatteis, Bruce Jones, Michael Fleisher, Doug Moench, Jim Owsley, Alan Zelenetz, Chuck Dixon, and Don Kraar. Although many artists worked on the different Marvel Conan comic-books at one time or the other, only a few apart from Windsor-Smith and Buscema produced more than a handful of stories. The most prolific include Ernie Chan, Alfredo Alcala, Gil Kane, Mike Docherty, Val Semeiks and Gary Kwapisz. John Buscema, in a 1994 interview, spoke of being Marvel's first-choice for Conan artist: "I was approached by Roy Thomas with the project to do Conan. He mailed a couple of the paperbacks to me and I read 'em and I loved 'em. I told Roy, 'THIS is what I want, something that I can really sink my teeth into....' • En 1979, la licence des comics Star Trek, précédemment détenue par Gold Key Comics, est attribuée à Marvel Comics qui réalise l’adaptation de ""Star Trek: The Motion Picture"" et une série de 18 comics basés sur la seconde mission quinquennale de James T. Kirk à partir de 1979. La série a été annulée en février 1982, du fait de ventes insuffisantes. La licence est alors attribuée à DC Comics en 1984.
In 1996 , Marvel again gained a license to produce new Trek comics, under the imprint of a new line commissioned by Paramount Pictures, entitled Paramount Comics. They began with a controversial crossover, between the original Star Trek crew and the X-Men. They produced several monthly series, including Star Trek: Voyager (the first ever Voyager comic), Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (taking over DS9 from Malibu Comics, a line which Marvel bought and absorbed into their own), Star Trek: Early Voyages (about Captain Pike and crew) and Star Trek: Starfleet Academy (about a group of young cadets including Nog). They also published a quarterly series, Star Trek Unlimited which featured TOS and TNG adventures. Numerous other special issues and crossover books that were not part of these series were also published. Many believe the large influx of Trek comics killed the market: sales dwindled, and most of the series were canceled a year-and-a-half later.

  • Marvel Comics is a real-world comics publisher which also exists in the Whateley Universe. This article is mainly about the points in which the Whateley version differs from the real-world organization. A consortium headed by Ayla Goodkind, Ron Perelman and a third partner, who may be Hatamoto's family, managed to stage a corporate takeover over late 2006 and a very successful IPO on January 2007. As Ayla describes the company's former situation: “I was lucky that Marvel’s been spawning off separate corporate entities for years, instead of consolidating, so when people finally wanted to incorporate in the 90’s, there were too many stumbling blocks to it. Then the bottom dropped out of the comic book biz, so no one thought it would be profitable to incorporate for years afterward. Marvel sold rights to several of their characters to get movies made, so, for instance, Sony owns more of the movie rights to Spiderman than Spiderman’s own creators. That limited the advantages of incorporation even further. Then they set up separate LLC’s to fund some of their movies, which complicated everything and actually lowered the net worth of the overall enterprise. Then they generated a chain of lame movies that did crappy box office business, and nearly went into bankruptcy. “Finally, the executive meddling at Sony made ‘Spiderman 3’ get put on hold, and made Tobey Maguire refuse to come back as Spidey, so Sony stocks took a hit and Marvel Studios Inc. nearly went under. So all those little screw-ups made the entire enterprise — all the individual pieces — readily available. So I was lucky to be in the right place at the right time, and see the possibilities if I could get the right people to cooperate. Sony wouldn’t play ball with Marvel Comics or Marvel Toys, but Hatamoto’s family owns enough Sony stock that they could apply pressure for me. Marvel Toys wouldn’t play ball with anyone else, but one of their wholly-owned subsidiaries utterly tanked because they depended on Disney merchandising, and Disney’s movies have bombed horribly over the last decade. I knew the right people here and there, so I was able to pull it off. Plus, I put up most of the necessary funding, when nobody else had the available liquidity.”

  • Though Marvel UK initially enjoyed exclusive rights to Doctor Who in comics form, their rights have gradually contracted since 1996, when the Eighth Doctor debuted in a series of strips that ran in Radio Times. Since the second series of the BBC Wales production, they have been one of several companies to enjoy publishing rights to the comics adventures of the Tenth Doctor. Nevertheless, their strip in Doctor Who Magazine is generally considered by most fans to be the "main" Doctor Who comic strip, with other comics, like those found in the BBC-produced Doctor Who Adventures, construed as "niche" comics for a specific audience. At the height of their influence, Marvel UK began to publish directly in the US market during the mid-1990s. Though they enjoyed initial success, they soon found themselves up against the wall of the general downturn in the US comics industry that decade. Having committed much of their resources to success in America, they were quickly reduced to a company that mainly reprinted Marvel US comics in Britain. By the turn of the 21st century, almost the only original work they were still doing was in Doctor Who and the Transformers. Badly cash-strapped, they were saved from extinction by the intervention of Panini Comics, a European publisher who had the Marvel reprint license for the continent. Panini's acquisition of Marvel UK had the net effect of Marvel Europe extending its territory to encompass the United Kingdom. Hence, from one perspective, the BBC's license to print Doctor Who comics and news didn't change hands, so much as the British license to print Marvel Comics. In other words, Marvel UK still technically exists as of 2008, with its licenses intact, but they are now owned by Panini, which also owns Marvel Europe. For this reason, it's within Panini's rights to now reprint a Doctor Who comic from a 1985 issue of Doctor Who Magazine, whereas special permission must be sought for Panini to reprint something from the Polystyle era.

Entering the Marvel universe, RoboCop’s futuristic setting is expanded beyond the restrictions of a Hollywood budget. Most likely to give the “future of law enforcement” a more science fiction based reality, gangs now ride on hover bikes, urban droids carry out public services like waste disposal, and almost anyone with the know-how or money can create a giant killer robot. The consistent theme throughout the 23 issues is RoboCop’s continuing struggle to balance his humanity with the machine Omni Consumer Products made him into after his brutal death. In the meantime, he’s fighting killer robots, cyborg animals, OCP’s rival companies, foreign nations, mercenaries, and OCP’s attempts to mass produce RoboCops.

Maybe at the same time we can pick out a new suit for him without knowing his size, or pick out his career for him without knowing his aptitude, or pick out a new breakfast cereal without knowing his fiber requirements or his feelings about little marshmallows. Penny: Spider-Man. Get him Spider-Man. Sheldon: Amazing Spider-Man, Ultimate Spider-Man, Spectacular Spider-Man, The Marvelous Adventures of Spider-Man, Spider-Man 2099? .. Oh, I forgot Sensational Spider-Man. —Quote from "The Excelsior Acquisition"
  • Marvel Comics is one of the top comic companies and the home of the strongest fictional series in the universe.
  • In 1980, Marvel assisted Toei in their second Sentai co-production, Denshi Sentai Denziman. At the time, Marvel desired Japanese shows based on the Incredible Hulk and the Silver Surfer, but with the success of Battle Fever J and the ease of creating another ensemble show, Toei chose to make another Sentai. In their final year of the three-year deal to use Marvel characters, Toei chose Hela, a villainess of the Norse God hero Thor, and used her look and color scheme for Denziman villainess Queen Hedrian, who would be portrayed by Machiko Soga. 1981's Taiyou Sentai Sun Vulcan was the final series to possess the Marvel copyright, but did not have any Marvel influence but may have due to the connection to previous season Denziman, including the return of Hedrian for a second season.
Busy with his tasks in the publishing company, however, Thomas postponed the negotiations with Rausch until the beginning of 1974 - when he and Stan Lee read an article published in Variety magazine, that finally convinced them of the commercial potential of the franchise - the five films already had earned $100 million, and there were rumours of the production of a TV series. Fearing the loss of a great chance, Thomas contacted Selwyn Rausch, telling him Marvel wanted to publish a comic inspired by Planet of the Apes and its sequels. Marvel acquired the license, and the first of 29 issues of the magazine arrived on the shelves in the United States in August 1974. Thomas later discovered that the high TV ratings for the Apes film marathon were due in some part to bad weather conditions, which forced viewers to stay at home on that particular night. Each issue of the magazine featured two to three stories, the first of which was a serialized adaptation of the original Arthur P. Jacobs films. The remaining vignettes comprised entirely unique characters, and took place within an alternate continuity from that of the movies, featuring stunning, insanely detailed artwork by the likes of Mike Ploog, Mike Esposito, George Tuska, Alfredo Alcala, Ed Hannigan, Rico Rival and Tom Sutton, and scripts by Doug Moench - like Terror on the Planet of the Apes, featuring an ape named Alexander and a human called Jason; and the Future History Chronicles. As Moench recalled:"Everything had to be sent to APJAC Productions and I know there were some issues with the art. It was always things like, 'The character can’t look like Charlton Heston.' In the original stories I did with Mike Ploog and Tom Sutton there were never any complaints that I know of." The series also featured articles on the entire Apes saga, and occasionally muddy reproductions of publicity photographs. In September, when broadcasting network CBS launched the Planet of the Apes television series, the Planet of the Apes magazine began including special cast and crew interviews of the series with each issue as well, along with double-page photo spreads. Over it's life, the magazine would not be a spectacular success but it would become one of the longest lasting of the Marvel magazines. From October 1975 (at about the same time that issue #11 of the black and white magazine hit the stands), Marvel began publication of the Adventures on the Planet of the Apes – a standard-sized 32-page comic book, which reprinted and colorized the movie adaptation stories from the early issues of the magazine. The gray wash shading of the magazine was retouched using the conventional four-color process common to most comic book issues at the time. While the Planet of the Apes magazine ran for a total of twenty-nine issues, Adventures on the Planet of the Apes only lasted eleven before poor sales forced its cancellation in December 1976. An increase in licensing fees prompted the original Magazine's cancellation in February 1977. The magazine issues were reprinted in many overseas markets including numerous foreign-language translations. Of particular note, the Marvel U.K. comic editions (which printed far less content but were published weekly) included some panels which had been edited out of the original magazines, a huge number of new cover illustrations, and also added a hastily-assembled modification of Marvel's Kilraven strip into a UK-only Apes story - Apeslayer. German reprints (Planet der Affen) featured full-process colourised versions of the movie adaptations (much more effective than the four-colourisation used in Adventures...), but the German run ended abruptly at issue #13, two chapters into the Escape from the Planet of the Apes adaptation. While the German issues also included translations of the original stories such as Terror, they remained in black & white. Mexican issues (El Planeta de los Simios), some with altered covers, reprinted the magazine material, but used their own four-colourisation on both the movie adaptations and on the original stories - the only colourised versions of those stories. French reprints (Planete des Singes) included Doc Savage stories, and featured a number of specially-created cover paintings. Other reprints in Australia (published by Newton Comics), Spain (El Planeta de los Monos), Italy (Il Planeta delle Scimmie), Brazil (Planeta dos Macacos), Portugal (Planeta dos Macacos), The Netherlands (Apen Planeet), Sweden (Apornas Planet) and Finland (Apinoiden Planeetta), used straight-forward copies or translations with only minor adjustments. After 1977, no new Planet of the Apes comic book titles were produced until independent publishing house Malibu Graphics optioned the rights in 1990, and began publication of a new line of Planet of the Apes comics for their Adventure Comics imprint. The Marvel black-and-white adapations of the first three movies were released in 'graphic novel' book form between 1990-1991 by Malibu Graphics - then-holders of the Planet of the Apes comic franchise - who negotiated a special deal with Fox to reprint the adaptations they held the rights to, and also reprinted chapters #1-4 of Terror on the Planet of the Apes as stand-alone comics. In 1981, Marvel bought the DePatie-Freleng animation company, among whose productions had been the 1975 Return to the Planet of the Apes series. Friz Freleng returned to Warner Bros. Studios while David H. DePatie made the transition to become the head of Marvel Productions. In the '90s, Marvel sold their animation back catalog to Saban Entertainment, and in 2001, Saban was sold to The Walt Disney Company. Thus, most DePatie-Freleng productions are now owned by Disney, but as a licensed property, Return to the Planet of the Apes is still owned by 20th Century Fox. Marvel also purchased Malibu Graphics - publisher of Planet of the Apes comic titles from 1990 to 1993 - in late 1994.
