A lot of stories focusing on Superman's origin, which took some inspiration from Smallville's version of the story, were published, like the twelve-issue comic book limited series Superman: Birthright (2003-2004) and the six-issue comic book limited series Superman: Secret Origin (2009-2010). Moreover, a lot of characters that were tied to Superman's origin and were main characters on the show, like Lana Lang and Pete Ross, started to appear more frequently in the modern day comics, after the success of the show. Due to the show, Lex Luthor's origin was also altered in the Modern era. Brightright offers an alternate look at Luthor's history, including his youth in Smallville, and his first encounter with Superman. The story has many similarities to the series and one main plot element shared by the comic and the show is Lex Luthor's problematic relationship with his wealthy father. After Brightright, Lex's origin was revisited many times in Countdown to Final Crisis #34, Action Comics #850 and in Secret Origin mini-series but what all of them had in common was the story element of Lex spending time in Smallville and meeting Clark, Lana and Pete, like in the TV show. Moreover in most of these stories Lex's father was referred to as Lionel, a name that it was originally given to the character in the TV series. Jonathan and Martha Kent's appearances in the comics, were also altered in the Modern Age of comics, to resemble the younger versions of the actors who portray them in the television series. Although now shown wearing glasses, Jonathan has a full head of blond hair, and Martha has long red tresses. This younger portrayal of the Kents has persisted in the regular DC Universe since Birthright was published. After Infinite Crisis various aspects of Superman's past were clearly retconned from the Birthright version but there was little to specifically indicate that the Kents themselves had been substantially changed. They were initially still depicted with younger appearances and the Schneider and O'Toole likenesses, however this eventually gives way to older, more traditionally generic, gray-haired representations. Chloe Sullivan was the show's first totally original character and due to the popularity of the show and her character, there were many attempts to bring the character to the main DC Universe. DC representatives and writers initially hoped to bring Chloe into DC continuity in 2007. According to writer Kurt Busiek, the problem of bringing Chloe into the mainstream comic book universe, and keeping her television background, was that she would have filled two roles, which both had already been filled by the adult comic book versions of Lana Lang and Lois Lane, so the plan was to give the character a new background. Busiek hoped to make Chloe the younger sister of someone Clark had gone to school with, who was a now interning at the Daily Planet. Busiek believed that this would make her different from Lana and Lois, but still familiar to readers who also watched the show. Another distinguishing feature would be that this version of Chloe would not know Clark's secret, nor would she be meteor infected. These ideas never came to fruition. In Superman: Secret Origin several nods were made to the character of Chloe. She did not appear in the mainstream DC Comics Universe until 2010, when she was introduced in Jimmy Olsen's Big Week, a serialized Jimmy Olsen story. Writer of the mini-series, Nick Spencer stated that introducing Chloe has been his first "positive contribution" to the DC Universe. The Red-Blue Blur/Blur name was used by Clark Kent before becoming Superman originally only on the show. However, it was alluded to in the comics too. In Superman/Batman #73 (August 2010), a close-up shot of Lois Lane researching on her computer, shows a newspaper headline in the background that reads, "RED-BLUE BLUR" GETS A NAME. Smallville featured the first incarnation of the character of Cyborg that was included among the founding members of the Justice League (on the show Victor is in Clark's age), as in the comics he didn't joined the team until the New 52, where he became a founding member, replacing Martian Manhunter. Before Smallville and later the New 52, he had been a long time member of the Teen Titans. In the Superman 80-Page Giant (2011), Kara is seen sporting the Smallville clothing attire of the character, that was featured in the very first episodes of the seventh season and its promotional photos. The character of Faora was reintroduced in the New 52, due to the popularity of the character after her appearance in the film Man of Steel. Before that, Smallville first featured the character as Zod's right hand woman and wife, instead of traditionally using the character of Ursa, who had replaced Faora in both comics and other media for decades. The use of the character in the film indicates that the creators were inspired from Smallville's version of the character and decide to use her once again. In the New 52, Green Arrow's appearance seems to be based on Smallville's version of the character with highlight his new costume. Oliver is now younger, and lacks his trademark facial hair, like in the series. Though the character later started resembling more the newest version of him, who appears on the TV show titled Arrow. Smallville featured Doomsday, having a Kryptonian background rather that being created by humans, as it was in DC comics. This story element was later used in the New 52 as well. Otis is a character that was first created to appear exclusively in Superman: The Movie (1978) and its sequel (1981). There were some references to the character and he did some cameo appearances in Elseworlds stories over the years but he didn't crossover into the main DC Universe until 2014. In 2012, Otis was introduced and also reinvented in some way in Smallville: Season Eleven as a major recurring character, where he was also given a last name for the first time in the character's history. After his appearance on Smallville, he made his first animated appearance on Young Justice and he finally made his debut in the comics in the New 52's title, Forever Evil.

In addition, many past television shows based on DC Comics properties have been distributed to DVD by Warner Home Video (until recently, one notable exception being the 1966 live-action Batman series, as the footage itself is owned by 20th Century FOX, and no negotiations have been made between the two companies, Fox has since licensed DVD rights to the series to WHV). DC Comics has also published numerous comic book titles based on the Looney Tunes characters as a result of the merger with WB.
  • DC began as Detective Comics, Inc in 1937, to publish a crime-themed Anthology Comic, Detective Comics, which introduced Batman in issue 27. In 1938, the company launched a second title, Action Comics, starring Superman. Detective Comics merged with National Allied Publications and All-American Publications in 1944 to form National Comics; however, due to the appearance of their logo, the company was popularly known as DC Comics, and eventually formally adopted that as its name. Detective Comics' superheroes proved popular in the 40s, but with the end of World War II, the genre entered a decline. National Comics managed to hold on during The Interregnum by diversifying into westerns, humour, romance, and scifi, as well as some crime and horror titles which were innocuous enough to escape being censored by the Comics Code. In the mid-1950s, DC revived their old superhero, The Flash, in order to appear in their anthology Showcase. Rather than bringing back the old character, the writers introduced a new hero with a new secret identity and a scifi-based origin. Following the success of this story, the Green Lantern was similarly reimagined, and National began increasing their superhero output. This practise was copied by several other publishers, most notably Marvel, who actually managed to exceed DC's sales and popularity in the 60s due to stronger writing. In 1967, DC managed to get some of this popularity by bringing Steve Ditko over from Marvel, who introduced elements such as flawed heroes and personality clashes during team-up stories. In the 70s, DC began to expand into more mature stories, attracting teenagers and young adults who previously considered comics to be exclusively a kids' medium. In the 1970s, after Marvel's Comics Code-defying anti-drug Spider-Man story, DC jumped on the bandwagon with a slew of 'relevant', social-issue-tackling Superhero stories. Most famously, Green Lantern and Green Arrow took a trip across America, fighting such issues as drug use and broken homes. Furthermore, Jack Kirby, the other major co-creator of the Marvel Universe signed up to create The Fourth World comics such as The New Gods and Mister Miracle. Unfortunately, these titles were ahead of their time and Kirby eventually returned to Marvel in the mid 1970s. However, by the late 1970s, the company was going through rough waters with Marvel finally beating them in sales and DC Comics floundering with titles that began big and then petered out within a few issues. Then the company got a new President, Jenette Kahn, who began to reorganize the company to fix that problem. For instance, she created health plans and instituted reprint fees. More importantly, in 1981, she instituted a royalty system for talents where the better their titles sold, the more they would be paid, giving them a stake in a series' continued success. Also, she and the senior editors took control of their titles' sustainability problem by creating the Limited Series, so they could at least get it under their control with predetermined endings for title. The moves paid off, the most obvious example being The New Teen Titans which became a major success under Marv Wolfman and George Perez, whose enhanced pay was enough incentive to keep the title going for years. Furthermore, they could show the origins of their original characters in a mini-series Tales of The Teen Titans without interrupting their main title. In addition, DC took chance on some of the talent from Britain and gave some of the promising talents, such as Alan Moore, Grant Morrison and Brian Bolland a shot at their lesser titles. The result was a explosion of astounding creativity that signaled the comic book version of the British Invasion. Mainstream comics would never be the same. Universes * The DCU * DC Animated Universe * DC Universe Original Animated Movies In the late 80s, DC was responsible for catapulting comics to a new era of respectability and critical acclaim. Part of this was their epic, Continuity-shaking Crisis on Infinite Earths, which showed that comics could tell stories as effectively as any novel or movie. The other was a pair of deconstructive works, Alan Moore's Watchmen and Frank Miller's Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, both of which brought a new level of intelligence and psychological complexity to the medium. They also kicked off the craze for Darker and Edgier, Hotter and Sexier comics, and started the so-called Dark Age. In the wake of this, all the other publishers started copying them, and even the main DC Universe became somewhat darker to accommodate the new tastes. DC's supernatural paradigm has changed considerably. In the 1990s, with the growing influence of The Swamp Thing and the beginning of the Kali Yuga storyline, DC left behind the Cosmic Good versus Cosmic Evil convention once common in superhero stories. Instead, according to current DC metaphysics, the cosmic battle involves Lawful Neutral (angels, Lords of Order) versus Chaotic Neutral (demons, Lords of Chaos), with both sides fairly indifferent to human perspectives about good or evil. (The only except to this seems to be the DC version of God, who is Good rather than Lawful, and the Devil, who varies according to the writer.) This cosmic disinterest in good/evil issues has been a major motivation for The Phantom Stranger and Deadman in their choices to side with humans instead of The Omniscient Council of Vagueness of the week. Imprints * All Star DC Comics * America's Best Comics * CMX * Johnny DC * Tangent Comics * Vertigo Comics * Wildstorm In the 90s, with comics enjoying increased sales due to a speculation boom, DC published a series of dramatic, shocking stories, including such events as Superman dying, Batman's back being broken, and Green Lantern becoming a Super Villain; sales were impressive, but they quickly dropped off again as the law of supply and demand came to bite speculators in their collective assi. However, DC endured, and continued to publish a number of critically acclaimed graphic novels under its Vertigo, WildStorm, and America's Best Comics imprints. (Other imprints, such as Helix (SF) and Minx (targeted at the teenage girl manga market), have been less successful.) Since then, DC has continued quite strongly, and in all likelihood will co-dominate the English-speaking comic industry for years to come. As of September 2011, DC rebooted their entire universe back to square one to make the stories and characters 'younger and more relevant' to the modern age. This took the form of "the New 52" comics revamped, including Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, the Flash, Aquaman and the Justice League. See DC Comics Characters for an index of the characters in the larger DC Universe, and check DC Comics Series for an index of all the series published by DC, both in and outside of the larger continuity.

  • DC Comics is a comic book publisher that held the license to produce Masters of the Universe comics in the early 1980s. DC's use of the Masters of the Universe characters began with the story "From Eternia -- With Death!," published in DC Comics Presents #47 (dated July 1982). After this, the preview story "Fate is the Killer" was included as a bonus in several of DC's November 1982 publications, to promote the three-issue Masters of the Universe miniseries that ran from December 1982 until February 1983. Additionally, DC produced the material appearing in the second wave of minicomics, although these were ultimately published by Mattel. DC's Masters of the Universe stories bridge the gap between the original four minicomics written by Donald F. Glut, which cast He-Man as a simple jungle savage, and the Masters of the Universe Bible that refines the concepts seen in the 1983 cartoon. He-Man is the alter ego of Prince Adam, though his parents bear no resemblance to King Randor and Queen Marlena. Unique to DC's stories is the portrayal of the Sorceress as the Goddess, though she retains the cobra-themed design introduced in Glut's stories. In July 2012, DC released a new Masters of the Universe comicbook titled He-Man and the Masters of the Universe.
  • In January 2004, DC comics published a one-shot crossover comic between the ThunderCats and Superman.
  • DC Comics, ранее была известна под названием DC Universe — лицензионная серия, запущенная в 2011-2012 годах, подсерия Super Heroes, фактическое возрождение серии Batman.
