It was released on eighth generation consoles and portable devices on April 14, 2015 and on seventh generation consoles on June 30, 2015.

El Trailer superó las expectativas en cuanto a reproducciones, pese a que se observan solo 2 personajes, aunque emblemáticos de los juegos: Scorpion y Sub-Zero. NetherRealm Studios afirmó que Este juego de Mortal Kombat es el "más intenso hasta la fecha". Ed Boon, director creativo de NetherRealm Studios, agregó que Tendrá un un nuevo motor gráfico, presentación cinematográfica y nuevo sistema de juego. El juego hizo su primera aparición en público en el E3 2014, que se realizó en Los Ángeles, California, donde se dieron más detalles y se mostró el primer Gameplay del juego. De acuerdo con Warner Bros., estará disponible para PS4, Xbox One y PC, ademas de estar también en dispositivos móviles como iOS y Android. El 28 de agosto de 2015 Warner Bros. anuncia la cancelación del juego para las versiones de Play Station 3 y Xbox 360 explicando que no pudieron adaptar el nuevo motor gráfico para éstas consolas. El 20 de enero de 2016, NetherRealm Studios anunció el lanzamiento de Mortal Kombat XL, el cual es una versión extendida del videojuego, donde se incluye el juego original junto con todos los DLC que tuvo tras su lanzamiento. Es decir, varios personajes adicionales y distintos skins con apariencias alternativas para algunos luchadores, entre otros extras. Por ello, Mortal Kombat XL tiene de serie el Kombat Pack 1 y 2 con la lista de siguientes personajes DLC: Alien, Bo' Rai Cho, Leatherface, Triborg, Goro, Predator, Tanya, Tremor y Jason Voorhees. Esta versión está disponible desde el 1 de marzo de 2016 para las consolas Playstation 4 y Xbox One, en agosto se dio a conocer que llegará a PC en la plataforma Steam, y finalmente salió el 4 de octubre del 2016.
