They are trained in secluded monasteries, spending many years with their noses deep in books. The spells used by most Monks deal primarily with enhancing the abilities of the caster, curing minor ailments, or hindering the abilities of enemies. Additionally, Monks are able to call upon the powers of plants and herbs and produce powerful concoctions.

  • In ancient times, long before Edron has been re-discovered, some Monks, followers of the evil god Zathroth, founded a monastery in the dungeons deep below the surface. They are not well disposed towards the explorers that are now coming there, and will attack every intruder fiercely. They are skilled fist fighters and can heal themselves.

  • Mystical creatures, they heal themselves about every 10 seconds, which makes them great as summons. They move items in their way. Commonly used for training of knights and paladins. This is one of two monsters that can be summoned but not convinced. The other is Gozzler. They can also be summon by the Man in the Cave.

Strategy
  • Something important while killing Monks is the time. You have to attack as fast as possible or they will heal themselves and you will need to use more Arrows/Runes or in the case of Knights you will receive more damage and maybe use more healing potions or spells. Quite high defense, so low skilled knights with one-handed weapons should stay away from these, as they will heal faster than you will damage them. If necessary to kill, consider using runes.

  • Monks were spiritual ascetics and practitioners of a mystical energy known as ki, the magical essence which flows through all living things. Monks utilized this energy to augment their own physical abilities, granting them extraordinary speed and strength. Monks could also use their own ki to alter the energy flow in other living creatures, for both defensive and offensive purposes. Monks' ability to manipulate ki was often (but not always) mediated by their own psionic ability. Sabuti Shanardanda was a notable monk from Amn during the Era of Upheaval. Danica Maupoissant was another notable monk studying at Spirit Soaring (Edificant Library). Grandmaster Kane was an incredibly powerful monk of the order of Ilmater, one of the companions of Gareth Dragonsbane who assisted him in defeating the evil witchking Zhengyi.
  • A Monk is an attackable NPC that is found at the Monastery, Entrana and in many churches. Monks are holy characters that are dressed on monk's robes, however, they do not drop them upon death. Abbot Langley is a well known monk who resides on the ground floor of the Monestary. He can restore players Hits upon request which is a reason why monks are often killed at the monastery as no food is required.
  • Before he is revealed to be the antagonist, he appears to be an archetypal eccentric sage. He always speaks in riddles and old proverbs, usually beginning with "Ancient wisdom..."
  • The Monk (修道士 Shūdōshi) is a combat magical class that is introduced in Fire Emblem: The Blazing Blade. Wielding Light Magic as their sole weapon of choice, Monks are commonly armed with the tomes of Lightning and Shine, but will, on occasion, carry advanced tomes such as Aura as well. The Monk class's equivalent in Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn is the Light Mage class, one that is exclusive to Micaiah.
  • The monk, like the sorcerer, is a damage-dealing mage class. However, unlike the sorcerer who deals damage from afar, the monk prefers close-quarters combat. Monks are exceptional single-target damage dealers.
  • The monk is one of the player roles in NetHack. Monks are always human, and can be lawful, neutral or chaotic. He is a martial-artist conforming to the "Shaolin Monk" stereotype. From the guidebook: Monks are ascetics, who by rigorous practice of physical and mental disciplines have become capable of fighting as effectively without weapons as with. They wear no armor but make up for it with increased mobility. The Monk is a good choice for a player who wants to practice both magic and hand-to-hand combat, but isn't interested in using weapons. It is a good class with which to achieve conducts. Monks know all nonmagical armors from the start. Their special spell is restore ability. When crowned they get a spellbook of restore ability instead of the standard crowning sword.

  • Monks are disciplined warriors who use martial arts to adventure.
  • One Time Lord was so enamoured of monks that he adopted their title as his name to become "the Monk". • Female Martial Artists often come from an area called “The Village of Beasts” an area known for marriage counseling for Aristocratic women that eventually became lost to the ages and became a legendary female fighting school. The highest rank a female martial artist can obtain is Nirvam. Role: Monks excel at overcoming even the most daunting perils, striking where it's least expected, and taking advantage of enemy vulnerabilities. Fleet of foot and skilled in combat, monks can navigate any battlefield with ease, aiding allies wherever they are needed most. Alignment: Any lawful Hit Die: d8 Starting Wealth: 1d6 × 10 hl (average 35 hl) The monk’s class skills are Acrobatics (Dex), Climb (Str), Craft (Int), Escape Artist (Dex), Intimidate (Cha), Knowledge (history) (Int), Knowledge (religion) (Int), Martial Knowledge (Close/Monk) (Int), Martial Knowledge (Double)(Int), Martial Knowledge (Polearms/spears) (Int), Perception (Wis), Perform (Cha), Profession (Wis), Ride (Dex), Sense Motive (Wis), Stealth (Dex), and Swim (Str). Skill Ranks per Level: 4 + Int modifier. All of the following are class features of the monk. On attacks of opportunity, you gain a bonus to damage equal to 1/2 your level. When an opponent makes an attack of opportunity against you, roll an attack roll against his attack, if your attack roll is highest, their attack misses if your attack beats their Armor Class you land a successful hit on them. You can do this for every attack of opportunity you can perform in a round. Weapon and Armor Proficiency: Monks are proficient with the club, Longbow, dagger, handaxe, javelin, kama, nunchaku, quarterstaff, sai, shortspear, short sword, shuriken, siangham, sling, and spear. Monks are not proficient with any armor or shields. When wearing armor, using a shield, or carrying a medium or heavy load, a monk loses his AC bonus, as well as his fast movement and flurry of blows abilities. A Monk gains a number of martial techniques he can utilize in battle. A monk can qualify for bonus martial techniques from a high wisdom score in the same way a Cleric can with spells. Unlike with spells, technique saving throws depend on the type of weapon wielded. Very few classes gain martial techniques for free, they must train to learn how to utilize the techniques. However this also means there is truly no limit to the number of martial techniques one can learn. Martial Techniques need not be prepared beforehand, they can be performed so long as you have uses left in the day. Learning martial techniques is described in the Skills Section of this system. File:Monklady.png AC Bonus (Ex) When unarmored and unencumbered, the monk adds his Wisdom bonus (if any) to his AC and his CMD. In addition, a monk gains a +1 bonus to AC and CMD at 4th level. This bonus increases by 1 for every four monk levels thereafter, up to a maximum of +5 at 20th level. These bonuses to AC apply even against touch attacks or when the monk is flat-footed. He loses these bonuses when he is immobilized or helpless, when he wears any armor, when he carries a shield, or when he carries a medium or heavy load. Starting at 1st level, a monk can make a flurry of blows as a full-attack action. When doing so he may make one additional attack using any combination of unarmed strikes or attacks with a special monk weapon (kama, nunchaku, quarterstaff, sai, shuriken, and siangham) as if using the Two-Weapon Fighting feat (even if the monk does not meet the prerequisites for the feat). For the purpose of these attacks, the monk's base attack bonus is equal to his monk level. For all other purposes, such as qualifying for a feat or a prestige class, the monk uses his normal base attack bonus. At 8th level, the monk can make two additional attacks when he uses flurry of blows, as if using Improved Two-Weapon Fighting (even if the monk does not meet the prerequisites for the feat). At 15th level, the monk can make three additional attacks using flurry of blows, as if using Greater Two-Weapon Fighting (even if the monk does not meet the prerequisites for the feat). A monk applies his full Strength bonus to his damage rolls for all successful attacks made with flurry of blows, whether the attacks are made with an off-hand or with a weapon wielded in both hands. A monk may substitute disarm, sunder, and trip combat maneuvers for unarmed attacks as part of a flurry of blows. A monk cannot use any weapon other than an unarmed strike or a special monk weapon as part of a flurry of blows. A monk with natural weapons cannot use such weapons as part of a flurry of blows, nor can he make natural attacks in addition to his flurry of blows attacks. At 1st level, a monk gains Improved Unarmed Strike as a bonus feat. A monk's attacks may be with fist, elbows, knees, and feet. This means that a monk may make unarmed strikes with his hands full. There is no such thing as an off-hand attack for a monk striking unarmed. A monk may thus apply his full Strength bonus on damage rolls for all his unarmed strikes. Usually a monk's unarmed strikes deal lethal damage, but he can choose to deal nonlethal damage instead with no penalty on his attack roll. He has the same choice to deal lethal or nonlethal damage while grappling. A monk's unarmed strike is treated as both a manufactured weapon and a natural weapon for the purpose of spells and effects that enhance or improve either manufactured weapons or natural weapons. A monk also deals more damage with his unarmed strikes than a normal person would, as shown above on Table: Monk. The unarmed damage values listed on Table: Monk is for Medium monks. A Small monk deals less damage than the amount given there with his unarmed attacks, while a Large monk deals more damage; see Table: Small or Large Monk Unarmed Damage. At 1st level, 2nd level, and every 4 levels thereafter, a monk may select a bonus feat. These feats must be taken from the following list: Catch Off-Guard, Combat Reflexes, Deflect Arrows, Dodge, Improved Grapple, Scorpion Style, and Throw Anything. At 6th level, the following feats are added to the list: Gorgon’s Fist, Improved Bull Rush, Improved Disarm, Improved Feint, Improved Trip, and Mobility. At 10th level, the following feats are added to the list: Improved Critical, Medusa’s Wrath, Snatch Arrows, and Spring Attack. A monk need not have any of the prerequisites normally required for these feats to select them. At 1st level, the monk gains Stunning Fist as a bonus feat, even if he does not meet the prerequisites. At 4th level, and every 4 levels thereafter, the monk gains the ability to apply a new condition to the target of his Stunning Fist. This condition replaces stunning the target for 1 round, and a successful saving throw still negates the effect. At 4th level, he can choose to make the target fatigued. At 8th level, he can make the target sickened for 1 minute. At 12th level, he can make the target staggered for 1d6+1 rounds. At 16th level, he can permanently blind or deafen the target. At 20th level, he can paralyze the target for 1d6+1 rounds. The monk must choose which condition will apply before the attack roll is made. These effects do not stack with themselves (a creature sickened by Stunning Fist cannot become nauseated if hit by Stunning Fist again), but additional hits do increase the duration. At 2nd level or higher, a monk can avoid damage from many area-effect attacks. If a monk makes a successful Reflex saving throw against an attack that normally deals half damage on a successful save, he instead takes no damage. Evasion can be used only if a monk is wearing light armor or no armor. A helpless monk does not gain the benefit of evasion. At 3rd level, a monk gains an enhancement bonus to his land speed, as shown on Table: Monk. A monk in armor or carrying a medium or heavy load loses this extra speed. At 3rd level, a monk uses his monk level in place of his base attack bonus when calculating his Combat Maneuver Bonus. Base attack bonuses granted from other classes are unaffected and are added normally. A monk of 3rd level or higher gains a +2 bonus on saving throws against enchantment spells and effects. At 4th level, a monk gains a pool of ki points, supernatural energy he can use to accomplish amazing feats. The number of points in a monk's ki pool is equal to 1/2 his monk level + his Wisdom modifier. As long as he has at least 1 point in his ki pool, he can make a ki strike. At 4th level, ki strike allows his unarmed attacks to be treated as magic weapons for the purpose of overcoming damage reduction. Ki strike improves with the character's monk level. At 10th level, his unarmed attacks are also treated as lawful weapons for the purpose of overcoming damage reduction. At 16th level, his unarmed attacks are treated as adamantine weapons for the purpose of overcoming damage reduction and bypassing hardness. modifier. By spending 1 point from his ki pool, a monk can make one additional attack at his highest attack bonus when making a flurry of blows attack. In addition, he can spend 1 point to increase his speed by 20 feet for 1 round. Finally, a monk can spend 1 point from his ki pool to give himself a +4 dodge bonus to AC for 1 round. Each of these powers is activated as a swift action. A monk gains additional powers that consume points from his ki pool as he gains levels. The ki pool is replenished each morning after 8 hours of rest or meditation; these hours do not need to be consecutive. At 4th level or higher, a monk within arm's reach of a wall can use it to slow his descent. When first gaining this ability, he takes damage as if the fall were 20 feet shorter than it actually is. The monk's ability to slow his fall (that is, to reduce the effective distance of the fall when next to a wall) improves with his monk level until at 20th level he can use a nearby wall to slow his descent and fall any distance without harm. At 5th level, a monk adds his level to all Acrobatics checks made to jump, both for vertical jumps and horizontal jumps. In addition, he always counts as having a running start when making jump checks using Acrobatics. By spending 1 point from his ki pool as a swift action, a monk gains a +20 bonus on Acrobatics checks made to jump for 1 round. At 5th level, a monk gains immunity to all diseases, including supernatural and magical diseases. At 7th level or higher, a monk can heal his own wounds as a standard action. He can heal a number of hit points of damage equal to his monk level by using 2 points from his ki pool. At 9th level, a monk's evasion ability improves. He still takes no damage on a successful Reflex saving throw against attacks, but henceforth he takes only half damage on a failed save. A helpless monk does not gain the benefit of improved evasion. At 11th level, a monk gains immunity to poisons of all kinds. At 12th level or higher, a monk can slip magically between spaces, as if using the spell dimension door. Using this ability is a move action that consumes 2 points from his ki pool. His caster level for this effect is equal to his monk level. He cannot take other creatures with him when he uses this ability. At 13th level, a monk gains spell resistance equal to his current monk level + 10. In order to affect the monk with a spell, a spellcaster must get a result on a caster level check (1d20 + caster level) that equals or exceeds the monk's spell resistance. Starting at 15th level, a monk can set up vibrations within the body of another creature that can thereafter be fatal if the monk so desires. He can use this quivering palm attack once per day, and he must announce his intent before making his attack roll. Creatures immune to critical hits cannot be affected. Otherwise, if the monk strikes successfully and the target takes damage from the blow, the quivering palm attack succeeds. Thereafter, the monk can try to slay the victim at any later time, as long as the attempt is made within a number of days equal to his monk level. To make such an attempt, the monk merely wills the target to die (a free action), and unless the target makes a Fortitude saving throw (DC 10 + 1/2 the monk's level + the monk's Wis modifier), it dies. If the saving throw is successful, the target is no longer in danger from that particular quivering palm attack, but it may still be affected by another one at a later time. A monk can have no more than 1 quivering palm in effect at one time. If a monk uses quivering palm while another is still in effect, the previous effect is negated. At 17th level, a monk no longer takes penalties to his ability scores for aging and cannot be magically aged. Any such penalties that he has already taken, however, remain in place. Age bonuses still accrue, and the monk still dies of old age when his time is up. A monk of 17th level or higher can speak with any living creature. At 19th level, a monk gains the ability to assume an ethereal state for 1 minute as though using the spell etherealness. Using this ability is a move action that consumes 3 points from his ki pool. This ability only affects the monk and cannot be used to make other creatures ethereal. At 20th level, a monk becomes a magical creature. He is forevermore treated as an outsider rather than as a humanoid (or whatever the monk's creature type was) for the purpose of spells and magical effects. Additionally, the monk gains damage reduction 10/chaotic, which allows him to ignore the first 10 points of damage from any attack made by a nonchaotic weapon or by any natural attack made by a creature that doesn't have similar damage reduction. Unlike other outsiders, the monk can still be brought back from the dead as if he were a member of his previous creature type.
  • The monk is a melee fighter who uses martial arts techniques to perform devastating attacks and influence the biological processes of his or her own body. Monks are widely known and respected for their ability to feign death, which, coupled with their other abilities of stealth and misdirection, make them excellent pullers and survivors. Unwilling to stand by and watch, disguised members of the Brotherhood of Guardians incapacitated Monk with their powers, tied him up and threw Monk off the island. Several years later, as the island was passing a mountain, he managed to climb back on, wishing to return to the way things had been before, looking to beat up Knuckles for old times sake. However, years of training and growing had changed Knuckles, and he was no longer so easily put to use as a punching bag. Despite this Monk refused to give in, and they fought each other evenly for awhile. (KtE: #30)

  • Monk is a class in ADOM. Monks are skilled fighters that specialise in hand to hand combat, kicking, and agility. Whilst their unarmed melee and kicking skills can grow tremendously powerful over time, the PC must not be burdened or worse or else they will revert to their default damage values (i.e. 1d3 base damage for unarmed melee and 1d4 base damage for kicking). Note that unlike Beastfighters, Monks do not receive any penalties if they choose to fight with weapons. Monks generally have difficulty surviving the early game due to poor starting equipment; however, they can become very powerful as the game progresses. They have excellent class powers and skill sets — including Find weakness, Alertness, Healing and Dodge. They can also train Literacy and Concentration quickly, giving them some promise as semi-casters; in practice, however, it is often tricky for Monks to learn spells without the appropriate starsign. As for race-class combinations, generally no race is a poor choice for a Monk. Gnomes and Elves make particularly good Monks, as due to their stat distributions they usually have decent archery and casting prospects as well as melee potential. Gnomes are particularly notable for to their fast levelling. Orcs, Drakelings and Dwarves make good Monks as well, for their fighting abilities. Hurthlings can make use of find weakness and the agility of Monks to greatly enhance their missile combat styles. Whilst Trolls' unarmed fighting skills develop a lot more slowly than those of other classes (due to slow levelling), their starting Strength usually makes up for this in the early game. Even in the later game, Trollish Monks armed with weapons can still make excellent fighters.

  • Monks are a group of scholarly mages, mainly interested in learning more about the ancient magical arts. They are trained in secluded monasteries, spending many years with their noses deep in books. While Monks often call upon the Powers during their castings, they tend not to be too religious, relying upon their familiarity with forgotten rites and words of power. The spells used by most Monks deal primarily with enhancing the abilities of the caster, curing minor ailments, or hindering the abilities of enemies. Additionally, Monks are able to call upon the powers of plants and herbs and produce powerful concoctions. While they devote much time to their studies and hold knowledge as a primary goal, Monks also believe that the body and mind must be in harmony. As a result, they tend to be much more physically fit than other classes of magicians. They prefer disabling their opponents in battle using whips, but are also skilled with flails, maces, nunchaku, polearms, and yo-yos. Monks can deal as much damage as an experienced warrior, and are usually difficult to hit during combat. The first monastery was founded centuries ago by a group of White Wizards. Since then, many other mages have founded their own research institutions. While clerics are sometimes angered by these secular intrusions into the domain of the Powers, Monks continue to learn more about things that have been long forgotten. Some young Monks choose to journey the world in search of new information, and most often begin in Sigil, home of one of the largest magical libraries in existence. A Monk's primary attribute is Knowledge.

  • __TOC__ The warrior monk of Golarion is a recent addition to the lives of the peoples of the Inner Sea. The combination of religious devotion, self-perfection, and martial combat is an import from the far regions of Vudra and Tian Xia. Monks are perhaps the rarest class in Golarion, outnumbered even by the elite paladins. The monk combines the piety of the cleric, the martial training of the fighter, and the deft skills of a rogue. Avistan and Garund, depite their fame for monastic traditions, have been slow to adapt to this new way of life and still produce very few warrior monks from a select group of schools. Each monk school represents a specific way of life—a set of principles, practices, and philosophies, that combine with a unique fighting style to distinguish a practicing monk from his peers. Monks more commonly learn from wandering masters—those who have seceded from their school, or have been sent to spread their teachings to the outside world. Each master carries with them a retinue of loyal apprentices—potential monks that learn habits of body and mind from their elder.

  • Monk, portrayed by Todd Bridges, is a recurring character in Everybody Hates Chris.
  • A monk is a person who practices asceticism, the conditioning of mind and body in favor of the spirit. The concept is very ancient and can be seen in many religions. The term monk comes from the Greek monachos (μοναχός), commonly translated as a solitary person. In the Greek language, the term can apply to men or women, but in English, it usually applies only to men, while nun is more commonly used to refer to female monastics. Other terms such as hesychast, solitary, hermit, anchorite, ascetic are usually interchangeable with monk. Although ascetics existed in various religions prior to Christianity, the term “monk” is of Christian invention.
  • A monk is a martial artist, proficient in unarmed combat who usually live in monasteries, where they rigorously train the mastery of their bodies and minds, notably being able to defend themselves with their bare hands and certain specialized weapons. Due to the discipline imposed by this training, monks must be of lawful alignment. Monks may travel among the general populace, looking like simple peasants. But when a monk leaves the monastery, it is generally to seek out adventures that they can use to test their skills against.
  • The Monk is a very unique melee class that can fit a variety of roles. They are gifted with the largest amount of hit points of any class in the game, and also have a decent ability to shrug off pain for how little armor they carry. They are also masters of blocking and avoiding blows. All of these abilities allow them to be very decent tanks, especially in experience groups where mobs do not hit as hard. As most of their damage avoidance occurs from blocking and dodging attacks, they do not fare as well against spell casters, and the damage they take against melee enemies is very spikey. While the Guardian or Knight would be a preferred tank, especially on raids, if the Monk is capable of doing the job the group will benefit from the additional DPS. Along with their hardiness and great damage output, they bring with them a number of unique abilities to aid their group in emergencies.
  • the monk has acces to three unique skills; Tekura, Kaido and telepathy.
  • In the long run, the Monk is the best front-class in the game. With enough experience levels, the Monk's AC and attacking power will far exceed that of any other class, even with the best possible equipment in The Thief of Fate. It is highly reccomended that you start developing a Monk ASAP. In Bard's Tale 1, the Monk does open-handed attacks that increase with every two levels of experience. Once your Monk reaches level 6, DO NOT equip any weapon. Maybe even level 4. He fights better without a weapon. The Monk also gets an additional attack for every four levels of experience, up to a maximum of 8 attacks. Here's the Monk Damage Table. The Monk has three other major fighting advantages: 1. * He gains an innate armor class bonus for each experience level. 2. * He has the highest to-hit bonus of any class. 3. * He has the highest first strike bonus of any class. You will notice that as your characters gain experience, your Monk will more often be the first to land a hit in each round, will never miss, and will do more damage than anyone else. Note, however, that by the endgame of Thief of Fate, a monk is largely worthless. The monsters have so many hit points that a monk's attack sequence will not kill them. An endgame party in Thief of Fate is better served with a Hunter, whose critical hit ability will guarantee a kill every round.

  • With the power of qi, they can both heal and inflict wounds. Their bare hands are stronger than weapons. —In-Game Description, Etrian Odyssey III The Monk is the primary healing class from Etrian Odyssey III. They also have the tenacity to engage effectively in battle. • As a hybrid class, it gets a limited number of skills itself, and cannot gain the high-end skills of the class it hybridizes with. For example, were it to hybridize with the Bard class, the Monk would be able to purchase any class card of the Bard class (as well as any class card of the Monk class itself) except Cacophony or Wayfarer, since either of those would cost 3 experience points. The Monk's starting equipment is determined by the healer class it hybridizes with. Like other hybrid classes, it only receives four skills on it's own, the rest of it's skills dependent on the class it hybridizes with.
  • Mists of Pandaria introduced the monk class. Monks are a hybrid class. Masters of bare-handed combat, monks choose to draw their weapons only for devastating finishing moves. • The Monks of Norrath have dedicated their combat training to learning how to turn their bodies into weapons. They shun all forms of bladed weaponry and heavy armour, favouring their fists. They only use weapons which make use of their considerable martial skills and have further abilities known as disciplines which enhance them further, though only for a limited duration. Monks have been known to use light clubs and staffs but their speed relies on travelling light, a Monks natural armour suffers when forced to carry anything beyond lightweight bags and coins. Adding additional strength to their armour and with the help of their natural agility, they can learn how to dodge, disarm and block quite proficiently. Monks offensive hand to hand skill improves as they gain experience, learning additional abilities at pre-decided intervals. They are capable of flying kicks, special punches and even the ability to feign (or pretend) death. Their mastery of mind over body also extends to regeneration, possessing an exceptional skill in mending their wounds with nothing but careful focus. Despite all these abilities Monks cannot take a lot of damage, they will only wear very light armour, its protection which relies on their never perfect success in dodging and parrying blows. They can sustain hits fairly well, but not well enough to be the exclusive centre of an opponents attention. Though Monks usually follow their religion quite closely, their faith has little influence on their potency. Their path requires total dedication to their teachings and the often harsh training they undertake. A great mental strength is needed to endure the pain and frustration of the trials, only the Humans and Iksar are believed to have the required composition to produce Monks. The association with their deity is from the (largely justified) belief that with faith comes much of the mental strength and dedication needed to become a Monk. While the requirements are difficult to meet and Monks are indeed quite rare in comparison to other professions on Norrath, those who successfully complete the training can easily make a big difference in a fight. Monks are capable of dealing huge amounts of damage and protecting others long enough for those better equipped to take the incoming. With their impressive self sufficiency they can adventure alone quite effectively and remain an able companion in a party. In addition their abilities to convince enemies they are dead, heal their own wounds and fend for themselves under attack mean they can fill quite a few roles for such a melee orientated class. Monk Races Drakkin, Human, Iksar Stats Monks are primarily damage dealers, the amount of damage they can inflict is directly influenced by their strength. A weak Monk will do less damage than a strong Monk and as such be less effective in a fight, as fights are really the only areas Monks are needed, its important to be as effective as possible. Monks avoid wearing heavy armour, preferring to stay light on their feet when in combat. Being exceptionally agile is a trademark of the Monk, their agility having a major effect on their ability to avoid and deflect blows. Working on increasing their agility is a sure way to last longer in a fight, making it necessary for all monks, along with their strength to also make it an individual trademark.

Though they don't cast spells, monks channel a subtle energy, called ki. This energy allows them to perform amazing feats, such as healing themselves, catching arrows in flight, and dodging blows with lightning speed. Their mundane and ki-based abilities grow with experience, granting them more power over themselves and their environment. Monks suffer unique penalties to their abilities if they wear armor, as doing so violates their rigid oaths. • Monks are devout worshippers of the light and are located at the Temple of Light in Oakfield. They are lead by a head monk known as the Abbot, who leads them in performing the Golden Oak Ritual that blesses Oakfield with its fertile fields. The monks dress themselves in a long robe of light grey and red colours. They can be found mainly at the Temple of Light, but often wander to other parts of Oakfield. In rare cases, they can be seen in Bowerstone. These monks seem to be descendents of the priests found in the Temple of Avo, following its destruction. The monks are a stark contrast to the Shadow Worshippers, and often times, find themselves at odds with the group. Upon completion of Defender of the Light, the presence of monks in Albion, especially around Oakfield, is more abundant. The Hero can also donate money to the monks by undertaking the Donating to the Light quest, which earns them experience, purity, good morality points, a decrease in age, and possibly, The Rising Sun.

  • A monk (Greek: μοναχός, monachos) is a person who practices religious asceticism, living either alone or with any number of monks, whilst always maintaining some degree of physical separation from those not sharing the same purpose. The concept is ancient and can be seen in many religions and in philosophy. In the Greek language the term can apply to men or women; but in modern English it is in use only for men, while nun is used for female monastics. Although the term monachos (“monk”) is of Christian origin, in the English language it tends to be used analogously or loosely also for both male and female ascetics from other religious or philosophical backgrounds. The term monk is generic and in some religious or philosophical traditions it therefore may be considered interchangeable with other terms such as ascetic. However, being generic, it is not interchangeable with terms that denote particular kinds of monk, such as cenobite, hermit, anchorite, hesychast, solitary. The first famous Christian known to adopt the life in a desert was St. Anthony the Great (251-356). Anthony lived alone as an anchorite in the Egyptian desert until he attracted a circle of followers, after which he retired further into the desert to escape the adulation of men. He is said to have been the first to go out into the desert for the sole purpose of pursuing God in solitude. As the idea of devoting one's entire life to God grew, more and more monks joined him, even in the far desert. Under St. Anthony's system, they each lived in isolation. Later, loose-knit communities began to be formed, coming together only on Sundays and major feast days for Holy Communion. The concept of monks all living together under one roof and under the rule of a single person — that is, monasticism as such — is attributed to St Pachomius (c. 292-348). At this same time, St. Pachomius' sister became the first woman to lead a monastery of women, or convent. Christian monasticism spread throughout the Eastern Roman Empire. At its height it was not uncommon for monasteries to house upwards of 30,000 monks. As Christianity grew and diversified, so did the style of monasticism. In the East, monastic norms came to be regular. Monasticism came to be accepted in the West as well. In the beginning, Western monasticism followed much the same pattern as its Eastern forebears, but over time the traditions diversified.
